City of Darkness Revisited : The Walled City Kowloon

Kowloon Walled City has become almost mythical since its demolition  in the nineties. Once an abandoned Chinese fort, it filled with refugees fleeing the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War 2. By 1987 this 2.6 hectare site was home to approximately 33,000 people! Unregulated and unserviced, the Walled City grew organically. Throughfares were often through living spaces. Inside this warren, an entire city existed, including such businesses as slaughterhouses. Many people lived their entire lives inside the 10 storey construction rarely seeing light. In it’s unregulated state, Kowloon Walled City was for many years run by triads.

Designed and edited by Greg Girard and Ian Lambot, the team behind ‘City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City’, this massive new publication questions those myths and explores the reality behind the Walled City’s extraordinary architecture and development. Through photographs, drawings and documents, many previously unpublished, plus an extended article by Hong Kong-based writer and journalist Fionnuala McHugh, the full story is revealed. See cool inside video http://www.ideabooks.nl/9781873200889-city-of-darkness-revisited . In this format it’s unlikely this book will be reprinted.
